Anime Review - Kill la Kill

''Fear is freedom. Subjugation is Liberation. Contradiction is truth.
These are the truths of this world!
Accept these truths, you pigs in human clothing!''

Hello friends,
How are you doing?

Today I bring you - Kill la Kill.
I ended up watching it last week , loved it and wanted more, but sadly, there's only one season.

Let's start this review, shall we?

Notes:

This anime is from 2013 and has 24 episodes with 23 minutes each + 1 special episode.
This the first original work from  Studio Trigger, founded by a couple former Gainax employees.
You may know some of their work:

Plot:

The schoolgirl Ryuko Matoi is searching for her father's killer and within that search she get's into a violent conflit with Satsuki Kiryuin, the supreme and powerful student council president of Honnouji Academy and her mother's gigantic fashion empire.

Will Ryuko find her dad's killer or will she find out even more about her life?

Artwork and animation style:

I admit that I was reluctant to watch Kill la Kill at first because I'm a bit picky when it comes to animation styles.
This one comes to mind as being very unique and some how, reminds me of the 80's anime style.
Overall, I was not disappointed. This specific style grew on me as episodes progressed.

Characters:

Ryuko Matoi is the main character alongside Satsuki.
She has a huge personality and is very stubborn.
She's driven by revenge and wants to find out at all cost what happened to her father.

Senketsu means ''Fresh blood'' and he's Ryuko's uniform
.

It's a vital character and super important through the story.

He fights along Ryuko and show's her the true meaning of friendship and sacrifice.

Mako Mankanshoku is a second-year student with a lot of energy! She is a no-star student and lives with her parents in the poor part of town.

She befriends Ryuko right away and sometimes gets into some dangerous situations.

She has a big heart and helps Ryuko in some important situations throughout the story.

Satsuki Kyruin- She is another main character an is the ruthless student council president of Honnouji Academy.

She wields a katana named Bakuzan and has a unrealistic fight capacity.

She is also the main opponent of Ryuko Matoi.

Honnouji Academy Elite Four is a group of 4 people that help maintain order at the academy.

Secondary characters:
They are important as well for the action and guidance of the anime.

The nudist beach

Mako's family:

Music:

The music? PERFECTION, believe me.
During the 24 episodes, we are presented different songs that, in essence, mark each character well, according to their mission and personality.

For example, Ryuko Matoi's goal to find out what happened to her father is well described in her song:

"Gotta find out who killed my dad
I hear the voice of you in my mind so
My blood is pumping
I’m ready to fight when you are
Let’s let no one break the bond that is ours
Show them what it means to be a shining star
You have my body
Let’s fight as one"

Satsuki's harsh and somewhat "robotized" way of being is also extremely well presented in her song. It's an extremely powerful one.

When watching Kill la Kill, it is important for the audience to understand that the laws of physics and logic do not apply to this story.
Some fight scenes are crazy and you'll see that some characters have exaggerated ways of dealing with situations. But I do think it fits well in this specific narrative.

On the positive side, the story is fun and, in a way, light.
I usually watch anime with heavy and psychologically complex stories, but it's good to have other types of styles available for those who like a lighter story once in a while.

Kill la Kill is an extremely popular anime, but viewers seem to de divided. Some say  is a terrible and shallow story and others, like myself, adore it.

It touches some important themes such as class division (from the poorest to the richest), power imbalance, resilience, courage, sacrifice, friendship, family values and some badass fight scenes.

Yes, there are times where nudity or sexual innuendos might appear, but that's not a reason to dislike the animation / plot at all.

The characters are funny and they all have their own value in the story.
As for the animation, despite apparently being a low-budget production, it is used in a surprising way.

The story of the entire series alone is reason enough to watch it on loop, any day, any time and even anywhere, laughing and crying each t
ime as if it were the first time.

So, what are you doing? Watch Kill la Kill now!

Have some fun, root for your favourite character(s) and cry as much as I did in the end.

Kill la Kill is a hell of a ride and I advise you to take a risk and watch it.

For me, it's a 10/10 to this day (2024) ♥
